What is phishing and hacking?

When do you know if you are getting hacked, and how to prevent it? ALSO, I have been receiving e-mails stating that I have won a cash grant/donation, they have gone even farther to say that I will receive it in my mail including the check, source of money, etc etc. It seemed very credible and believable bc I go to many scholarship websites and this was a "scholarship grant". The only thing they needed was my name, address, and telephone to send it. My friend suggested that they could be "phishing" to steal my identity.. is this possible? Where can I find out if this is a credited site and people???What is phishing and hacking?
Phishing is just a fake website pages.. which is just similiar to the orignal online vendors but they dont have the security certificates.. and they are fake... and whenever u put any of the information in then .. an email abt that information is sent to that phissing website hoster... which shouldn't eb happened..



while hacking is may be concerned in many fields hardwares.. websites or computers... well it basically mean to just have a loot at the encypted or confidential matters or someone by breaking into his/her system...

Word of advice, never answer any of those emails, no matter how lucrative they sound. If you must answer one, call them to verify. By answering an email back, clicking a link or especially opening an attachment you leave yourself open for your IP address to get accessed which can lead to viruses, hacking, malware programs, etc. Make sure you have a firewall activated on your computer to prevent hackers.
