When and why is Yahoo! Briefcase closing?

We will close Yahoo! Briefcase on Tuesday, March 30, 2009. After this date, you will be unable to access Yahoo! Briefcase or your files within the Yahoo! Briefcase account.

Why? Because, in a Web 2.0 world where Yahoo! Mail has unlimited storage and Flickr offers media sharing, users and services have outgrown what the Yahoo! Briefcase service can provide. As such, Yahoo! is closing Yahoo! Briefcase to focus our efforts elsewhere.

The closing of briefcase will not affect any other parts of your

account or files/emails you have stored elsewhere on your yahoo

account. If you have never used yahoo briefcase disregard the email.

What is computer phishing, why is it a problem and how can antivirus sofware help?

phishing is where you got to a site like Google or yahoo for example and in the web browser it say Google and the site look like Google. but there might be a slight off in the in the address bar or it appearance. meaning you at a fake site. use the purpose of such attack. is to obtain your personal info. it a problem because of it current easy and popular to do. expectantly has the economy get worse and worse.

the other problem with phishing attacks is there almost impossible to detected. which why in recent time use security admin had to come up with a very complex way of fixing the problem. which is why you see a color code bar in your address bar now every time you put info in but beyond the color code system which is a stander part of all current browser there is no other defense currently for the average user.

In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames

A ripoff (or rip-off) is a bad deal. Usually it refers to an incident in which a person pays too much for something. A ripoff is distinguished from a scam in that a scam involves wrongdoing such as fraud; a ripoff, on the other hand, is in the eye of the beholder.

  • What is phishing, which is very common in social networking sites like facebook?

Phishing is, simply put, trying to steal someone's private info (passwords, log-in details, credit card details) by having them visit a web page that looks just like a site they know and trust.

For instance, you might get an e-mail supposedly from your bank, informing you that something is wrong with your account; you click the link in the e-mail and are taken to a page that looks just like the bank's site, so you try to log in, but your info is sent to the people who set up the fake site, and they may then use it to access your bank account and do whatever they want with it.What is phishing, which is very common in social networking sites like facebook?

Phishing is getting hold of somebody's personal data by making them believe that they are supplying it for legitimate purposes and to a genuine agency.

Sometimes you may get a mail, purportedly from your bank, but actually from some crook, saying that your details need to be updated in their server. You are asked to click on some link, which opens a web page similar to your bank's. You are asked for your account number, login id, password and other personal details like credit card details. You supply these, thinking that your bank has asked for them. Actually they land in some crook's possession. That is phishing.

Incidentally, banks never ask for such details. What is Phishing and How to Block any Website?
Phishing is a way of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT administrators are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting public. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail spoofing or instant messaging and it often directs users to enter details at a fake website whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one. Phishing is an example of social engineering techniques used to deceive users, and exploits the poor usability of current web security technologies. Attempts to deal with the growing number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, public awareness, and technical security measures.

A phishing technique was described in detail in 1987, and the first recorded use of the term "phishing" was made in 1996. The term is a variant of fishing,[4] probably influenced by phreaking, and alludes to "baits" used in hopes that the potential victim will "bite" by clicking a malicious link or opening a malicious attachment, in which case their financial information and passwords may then be stolen. What is Phishing and How to Block any Website?

I tried this once before, and the message disappeared as if it were deleted. But what actually happened to it, and the person who sent it?What happens when you mark mail as "phishing scam" on a hotmail account?
the email gets sent to the spam folder and future emails from the sender address and similar titles/content will be filtered to spam.

What is the phishing filter on my computer and should I turn it on?

    phishing pronounced fishing

Yes it does not hurt to turn it on.

phishing is when someone tries to get you to release personal information about yourself, to some one who intends to use use it for their own personal gain. They are "fishing" for information

The e-mail will have a very official look to it, with a link. The link does not really take you to where you think it does.

Only use your own bookmarks to go to your banking, ebay, paypal, or any site that may have your personal information.

The "phisher" is try to get you to give them your bank, credit card or debit information. That information can then be used to steal your credit identity. It can take months to recover if it should happen to you.

Never give out personal information the Internet unless you absolutely know it is a trusted source.

My bank has a practice that will encourage phishing. Where can I report this?

My bank is Wachovia, when they wish to communicate (new online statement available or "secure" message available) they send a message with an embedded link to their login screen. This is EXACTLY what a phishing email would do and it is impossible to tell whether it is the real site or the fake. I have emailed them about it but they continue to send these.

Does anyone know if banks are required to adhere to some kind of standard online security practices and who would be interested in hearing about his lapse? My bank has a practice that will encourage phishing. Where can I report this?
contact your state's banking department and the sec of state office with your insight. good luck.My bank has a practice that will encourage phishing. Where can I report this?
you should go talk to them and ask how to tell a real e mail from a fake one.My bank has a practice that will encourage phishing. Where can I report this?
my bank will not send emails under any circumstances ...any message they have for me is made by phone or letter by mail ..this is the only way to go ...this way if i do receive someone claiming to represent my bank i know for a fact its phishsing ......i would not even think of responding like u say your bank wants you to ...go somewhere else .. thats a lame bank if u ask me .......
I know many major banks that don't even have an antiviurs system installed. They are to damn cheap.

Would go to the bank and speak with the manager.

There has to be a banking commission where you reside that issues a Lic. to banks to operate and oversees them, just like insurance companies. Try this avenue also.

What is the difference between cognitive hacking and phishing?

Cognitive Hacking is where someone attempts to defeat or exploit the security capabilities of a computer system.

    WHILE

Phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites (YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, Windows Live Messenger), auction sites (eBay), online banks (Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Chase), online payment processors (PayPal), or IT Administrators (Yahoo, ISPs, corporate) are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging,[1] and it often directs users to enter details at a fake website whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one. Even when using server authentication it requires skill to detect that the website is fake. Phishing is an example of social engineering techniques used to fool users [2], and exploits the poor usability of current web security technologies [3]. Attempts to deal with the growing number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, public awareness, and technical security measures.

HOPE THIS HELPS...What is the difference between cognitive hacking and phishing?
Hacking is a tricky word because it has two meanings. Its original meaning (which is still sometimes used) simply means you are a very advanced computer user accomplishing extraordinary feats using your awesome programming skills (probably in a good way).

Nowadays, it tends to have a negative connotation. Usually 'hackers' are seen as users who use their awesome programming skills to seek out vulnerabilities in systems and in turn bring those systems down and/or cause damage to them.

A phisher on the other hand is simply looking for ways to collect personal information from a user. Unlike a hacker which uses his programming skills to 'breach security', a phisher often uses plain old psychology to fool a user into providing the information without thinking twice (e.g. a phisher might create a site yahooo.com that looks exactly like yahoo.com but instead steals user's passwords as they enter them).

  • What are these phishing email's trying to achieve?

I keep getting emails stating I've won money, had a business proposal, someones died and left me money...etc.

Clearly they are phishing emails, i just want to know what they are going to achieve from getting my address? It never asks for bank details, just address and phone number. What will that get them? What are these phishing email's trying to achieve?
Phishing emails go after information that involves passwords, such as on-line banking or email account details.

What you are describing are 419 or advance fee frauds, where you will be asked to send money before you can be sent the imaginary money. The scammer may want to phone you and may want your address to send a fake check. Or he may just ask for the details he would need if it was a genuine transaction. What are these phishing email's trying to achieve?
Had you replied they would eventually ask you to send money by wire transfer to them to release a larger amount of money, an advance fee, only the larger amount of money doesn't exist. If you fell for that then they invent more and more 'fees' until you realise it's a scam or you run out of money. They wouldn't be able to do anything with your bank details, these people operate from internet cafes in poor countries. What are these phishing email's trying to achieve?
Sometimes, that is enough of a 'hook'. If they get a response at all, they know that the email address is 'live' and somebody is willing to respond Then, they can (a) send you even MORE crap and (b) sell your address as a 'live' one to other spammers.
They aren't going to ask for bank details in the first email or everyone would be suspicious and just delete it. They start by asking for simple things - and you think they can also get this out of the phone book so it's not any danger. But then they know you are gullible -- meaning they've already sold your address on to other scammers -- but then the real hook begins. They gather information in pieces so you don't become too suspicious. They may ask for a copy of your drivers license/passport to "prove" that you are actually have the same name as the "winner". Then they will ask for your bank account details saying they want to transfer the money to you. But instead they are clearing out your account

Once they have a copy of your passport or drivers license, if they are overseas they just set up a fake email address using a variation of your name (johnqsmith333@yahoo), email your bank saying they are you stuck overseas in a financial emergency. They "prove" they are you by sending the copy of your passport or drivers license you sent them, give the account number, and have the bank transfer your money to their bank. And once you discover it your bank won't refund you because YOU gave your bank account details and a copy of your ID to another person- you did not protect your privacy

If they are in your country, they can easily make a fake ID in your name but with their picture, walk into any branch of your bank, fill out a withdrawal slip with your name and account number, go up to the teller, show the ID, ask for the balance, then put that amount on the withdrawal slip and empty your account

Or they will just send you a phishing email that looks like it's from your bank saying there has been a system upgrade and you need to login to verify your account - and once you do you just gave your login to the scammer who immediately changes your password and transfers all the money out of your account

What would I see if a phishing site is sent to me?

say for instence a fake facebook is sent to me, if i click it and log my username and password in, what happens from there? I know the hacker gets my password, but does the site continue or does it say uve been hacked or????What would I see if a phishing site is sent to me?
One way to tell its a fake link is you can take your mouse over the link. Just scroll over it, don't click it. At the bottom of your browser window is the status bar. This bar will read the link source. So for example the link says facebook.com but the status bar says something else then you know its a bad link and you shouldn't click on it.What would I see if a phishing site is sent to me?
Phishing attacks trick you into entering your username and password at a fake site that looks like your bank, your broker or employer. It may be an email that says, ”We suspect an unauthorized transaction on your account. To ensure that your account is not compromised, please click the link below and confirm your identity.”

The problem is it looks like it comes from your bank, but in fact the email links to a phony site that is an exact copy maintained by criminals. Once you enter your username and password they have it and can do anything you could do online at the real site. Typically they will route you through to the real site after stealing your password so you do not even suspect anything is amiss.

    Hope this helps!

What is the difference between phishing and farming?

In regards to computingWhat is the difference between phishing and farming?
Phishing is trying to get a persons information, usually by tricking them somehow. Most often, an email will try to get you to go to a fake site and 'login', or tell you you need to 'verify' an account or something by sending them a password or account number or somesuch.

    Common example:

"We have detected fraud on your bank account, go %26lt;here%26gt; to login and confirm or deny fraudulent charges." %26lt;here%26gt; of course may _say_ yourbank.com, but actually goes to someplace like gimme.your.bank.account.com

Farming is usually related to gaming. In a game, it means you do the same thing over and over again, usually in the same place, making a little bit of game 'cash' each time until you save up a large amount. In some cases, farmers will then sell whatever game cash they made to another gamer for real cash.

Just forward them to the fraud department of your bank. The more they get of them, they have a chance to trace the source of them. Even if it's not from your bank, because the banks pool all their information.

When you get them just click on the forward button. I've got my bank's fraud department in my address book so it's there already!

If you are pretty certain that it is a phishing scam, alert people of it by going to some of the sites for reporting these things (google for reporting scams) or the internet police or both. Then as far as for yourself, ignore the beast and take precautions if you feel your security and passwords may have been compromised. You might want to consider a suggestion already made to you to change passwords in your box.
dont take the hook or you will be caught

.................If your caught u better hope they throw u back inWhat should I do when I am victim of a phishing mail?
Change your Password to your account
If it is a place where I have an account, I forward it to spoof@"wherever". I never ever click on a link in the email. If it is too late, go to the site by typing it into the address bar yourself, and change your password.

If you don't have an account at the place, delete it and forget it.What should I do when I am victim of a phishing mail?
We all get those every day. Delete it and move on.

When I mark them they get deleted but it seems like they keep on coming even from the same addresses and not get "marked" and therefore prevented.

What is the point of it?Hotmail: what happens when you mark a mail as Phishing Scam?
Mark it as Spam and it will go to your Spam Box. Marking it as Phishing means they will review the mail and see if it is. They will be getting litterly hundreds of thousands of complaints so they have quite a bit of work. You are not the only customer of hotmail, keep that in mind. Most people tend to forget that.

get your dad to changed or stop using that e mail account

and do a full scan of his computer

his e mail address book as been compremised on that account

also the people who have recieved an e mail from him because their accounts are also likely to be the same

    use these programs

These programs are excellent at removing Trojans and viruses etc etc

but they take time to check your computer. You can just pick one to use and hope that one finds it. But the more different ones you use the better chance you have. It鈥檚 a slow process doing a full scan but it will be worth it to have your computer back to normal

Personally I would run kaspersky first but that is up to you.

If you copy and paste these instructions onto a word document it will be

    Easy to remember.

go to this web site http://www.f-secure.com/security_center

and run this free on line scanner if it finds any it will remove them for you

    then

go to this web site http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/

and run the free house call scanner

it will then remove them for you

    then

go to this web site http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/cente鈥?/a>

and do a free protection scan and tune up scan and clean up scan from micro soft

I've seen some mentions on other question about phishing scams but don't really know what that means. Is it like the e-mail scam where if you give some deposed african prince your bank account number so they can hide funds and you get to keep a million when all is said and done -- only to have your account wiped out? What exactly is a phishing scam?
It's a group or company trying to get information they can use to rip you off they couldn't normally get. If they ask for your credit card information, social security, sensitive internet accounts with passwords. That's phishing.

However, if it's a job site that asks for your name, address and phone number -- that's NOT a phishing scam. That's information available in most phone books or city halls and not sensitive. There's nothing about your name or address that can be used to rip you off.

I think it's an important distinction to make.
In computing, phishing is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. eBay, PayPal and online banks are common targets.

    Buzibuzz

http://www.greendoc.net/What exactly is a phishing scam?
Pretty much that's it. It's a scam where they send out a lure of some kind to try and get money from you. Wikipedia defines it as:

phishing is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. eBay, PayPal and online banks are common targets.

So, those paypal e-mails you get where they say your security has been breached and you need to enter your password through the e-mail link -- that's a phishing scam. They would take that information and drain your paypal account.
In computing, phishing is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. What exactly is a phishing scam?
It's when scammers send you an email, posing as a bank, ebay, etc (anything online). They usually say they are re-doing something and need you to click on a link to verify your email address, passwords, account numbers etc. In reality the link takes you to their fake site which steals your info.
The way I've always seen phishing scams is a fake website made to look like a real popular website, so when you go to login, it will steal your password.

Like if someone made a fake site that looked alot like the login page for Yahoo, and sent out links or something, people might go there, 'log in' and have their passwords stolen. And they wouldn't even know sometimes since the site could be smart and automatically redirect them to the REAL Yahoo login.
    Something like that!

Phishing is generally a contact made to you by someone you think it is, but it's not.

i.e. You think you've had an email from your bank, you click the link in the email %26amp; it takes you to a page that looks just like your 'normal' online banking service. (Except it's not!)

It's just a con to get you to fill-in your personal information, which then gets sent onto a fraudulent party %26amp; they use it for whatever purposes they intend to.

You provide the information %26amp; you have been phished!
Phishing is a hackers' activity that steals important information from your computer (like passwords and site account info). Phishing is often hidden in emails or infected websites.
It goes like this... You get an official looking e-mail saying to click on this link. You click, and perhaps the site asks you for your credit card number, your social security number or some other bit of info "for verification purposes" that will allow the phisher to access your personal data, such as your bank accounts, lenders, etc.

Email Inboxes-- What happens when I "mark as phishing" a particular email?

I registered with Do Not Call.gov. But this is computer email. So what, specifically, happens?Email Inboxes-- What happens when I "mark as phishing" a particular email?
Usually, phishing emails go to the spam box, but as you noted, sometimes they get through and end up in your inbox.

When you "mark as phishing", the email likely gets sent to your spam folder. However, the email provider (Yahoo mail, gmail, hotmail, etc) will now know that one person believed this email to be phishing.

You can imagine that across the entire userbase, if a sufficient portion of the userbase believes that a particular email is a phishing email, then the email provider will recognize it as such, and will then mark the email as a phishing email for everyone else.

So for instance, the next time a phishing email ends up in the spam inbox, it could very well be because other users have marked it as a phishing email. Spam email detection depends both on automated algorithms and user-provided input, which is a form of supervised machine learning ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supervised_鈥?/a> ).

Phishing emails are illegal, but they're really hard to stop because most emails do not originate within the United States, so the U.S. has no jurisdiction nor power to stop them.Email Inboxes-- What happens when I "mark as phishing" a particular email?

How do you know if it is a phishing attempt or legit?

Recently I received some emails from what appeared to be my credit card company saying that there had been too many invalid attempts to log into my account and that I needed to log in and change my password. I knew that it wasnt my credit card company, because they sent the email to my home email address not the business email that was on the account. How else do you know if it is phishing or not?How do you know if it is a phishing attempt or legit?
    Hi there!

It is a phishing site when you enter a dummy account and it will prompt you to the next page asking for your personal information like name and address. You would also see the difference of the legit site that there is a copyright, company info, privacy policy, and the terms of service in the bottom of the page. As you click it there will open a next window to appear the details or information.

Never trust a phishing site for it will zero your account. If you encounter one report it to the fraud Internet crime or whoever hosted their domain.

Hope that would help... Good day! =)
I don't worry about it and treat it all as phising. I don't send any information to anyone, financial or otherwise. I have never received a e-mail request for personal information from any company with whom I do business. How do you know if it is a phishing attempt or legit?
No legitimate bank or credit card company will contact you in that manner.

If you are in doubt and you use internet account maintenance - go log directly into your account (from their main site, not through the email link) and look for notification of problems there.

Never provide information when you are contacted - only when you are the one making the contact to the business yourself through a known link. That goes for phone call contacts, too.
a legit business will NEVER EVER ask for your password or other information in an email if you get an email asking for that information then you know it is not legitimate. It is far too easy for anyone to make a site that looks official, but only serves to collect personal information. Don't even click on the links provided, but if you did, you could note the web address that you are directed to may be similar to, but definitely different from, the actual web address of the legitimate company. It would also not display the be secure site symbol that should appear on your task bar when you visit secure sites.

contact the company and let them know you are being phished under their name. How do you know if it is a phishing attempt or legit?
That's a phishing attempt. No credit card company, or financial institution for that matter, will send you an email to verify your info, as they already have them stored in their servers. Don't fall for anything like that. Just mark that message as spam and delete it immediately. That's all to it.

Phishing scams and ID theft are on the rise. There are many phishing scams, some of them include:

Sending someone a fake e-mail alert asking them to update their info. This can be done to hijack an e-mail account, bank account, PayPal account, etc.

Sending someone a fake lottery e-mail. They send fake winning notifications, and ask for personal info and banking info. What are some of the new phishing variations that have emerged?

  • What is the difference between phishing and pharming?

Both are entirely made-up terms, of course. "Phishing" generally refers to those e-mail messages that say they're from a bank (or eBay or PayPal or your ISP), but the links actually go to some other web site where the phisher (still pretending to be a bank) asks for your information, and will use it to steal your identity, money, etcetera.

"Pharming" is another twist on the same thing, using more devious tricks. In phishing mail you can usually figure out that the site you're about to visit isn't really your bank. So for "pharming," they'll first trick you into running a program (see "trojans," "malware," "spyware," etcetera) that changes the way your computer looks up domain names. Then, the pharmer can tell your computer that bank.com is some web server in Russia, and it's much harder to figure out that something's wrong.

There's some good info about these kinds of scams at http://antispam.yahoo.com/faqs#a13 .What is the difference between phishing and pharming?

    You should leave it on.

"Phishing" is a play on the word "fishing" 鈥?because perpetrators are "fishing" for your private information or trying to find ways to trick you into sending them money. Don鈥檛 be fooled! These deceptive emails are used to commit identity theft, charge your credit cards, empty your bank accounts, read your email, and lock you out of your online account by changing your password.

Very irritating.I do not like the new Yahoo home page. Looks like a phishing site. What do you guys think?
I don't like it one bit either!

Yahoo is testing a new layout, but it is not hitting all users at the same time.

"M.yahoo.com" (or another country's equivalent) is not the yahoo.com version for mobiles, but a new site layout which is tested on a couple of users without asking them for their consent first. Some users like it, but most don't. Many are upset as they cannot get to their mails without clicking many different links before they get to read anything. One user reports that he was told he can't get the layout changed. His reaction: he simply made his mail account his homepage and bookmarked the other Yahoo services. Well, I've been doing this for a long time myself as I want to be able to choose which Yahoo services to use and how to use them...

Most are scams, but usually looking to fleece you of money, not for ID theft.

With name and SS#, they could potentially start some ID theft. Is that all you gave? No birthday or address?
The only reason they would ask for it is so they can send you tax information at the end of the year. for computer hacking. I think that's what they all should get.Can someone be caught if he uses the phishing method for hacking?
Listen, Hacking is easy. Covering your tracks is another story, if you try it on the governmnt then you better be dam well sure what, when, where, how, why, your hacking the government system. the charge might be treason, however if you hack a company then they might not catch you right away the fbi might get invovled and hunt you down you better be dam good if you plan on hacking the government or any corporation and plan to get away with it, if they dont catch you right away, they will stop at nothing.

if you hack and steal or crash a system of a company with a crazy phishing program then the FBI will get involved you will get caught. if you want to hack find a network specialist that will do it for you the smarter way he may not get caught for a few months but you never know who is watching the system.

How can I turn on phishing on my computer?

That sounds like adware. I suggest you download Ad-Aware Free and Spybot S%26amp;D (they鈥檙e free), install them, update them and run them in Safe Mode With Networking.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking:

    1. Log out and reboot your machine.

    2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.

    3. Select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu.

    4. Login. If the malware has changed your password, try logging in as Administrator. By default, Administrator has no password.

    5. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different.

    6. When you're finished doing what you need to do, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

    Good luck.

Are there bad people who answer phishing or spam questions?

What are bots? Do people answering questions that tell you about websites try phishing you? How can you tell if its a legit answer? Are there bad people who answer phishing or spam questions?
A lot of posts you see on Answers are definitely spam. Most are sites that will either try to cheat you in some way if you make a purchase from them, or possibly malware that can damage or hijack your computer.

Bots are simply programs that do repetitive tasks quickly, in this case generate spam. We see a lot of them on Answers.

There are different ways to spot them. But the first sign is they offer some website for you to go to. Often that is pretty much their whole answer. Then if you check you will see they are almost always very new accounts and almost always Level 1. And if you look at their Q%26amp;A you will see they are repetitive. Sometimes they may give a very brief and poor answer before posting their website. An example often seen on Health category is they will say to take such-and-such a drug for your medical problem, then for more info go to blah-blah.com.

Safest thing to do is never go to a website you did not seek out unless you recognize it as a known good site and trust the person posting.

If they are only here to advertise, even in the unlikely event they are giving a legitimate site, they do not deserve our business for unwelcome posts on Answers.

What is something you should always do whenever you come across a phishing attack?

I have had all kinds of things to try to attack my computer. Just about every virus/trojan/malware/spyware you can think of. None have ever made it in. Neither has a phishing attack. The main thing you have to remember is the internet is a dangerous place. Some will say it's not. Be careful of those people. They will get you into trouble. The best way to keep from having a phishing attack is to use common sense. Anything that asks you for to much info can be a phishing attack. You have to know for sure what or who your dealing with. Stay away from places that ask you for simple things like telephone # SS # CC #. NEVER use a site you don't know. Get web of trust, Norton Safe Web, McAfee site adviser. These can help protect you from phishing.

What causes phishing attacks is ignorance. Sorry, Nothing personal, Just the truth. Anytime you are asked for info for something fishy, leave the website. Learn to look before you leap. In other words you see that great gun you would like to add to your collection. You check out the site. Looked for blog post, checked with the BBB. You checked web of trust and others. Everything seems OK, Go for it. You need to buy a anti virus product. You see Anti virus personal and think you want to try it out. You check it out the same way as above. You find out it's a rogue that steals personal info. If you have submitted your info to the phishing page, then:

But the fact remains that this is spam and I can't help but wonder if you aren't getting these out of your bulk mail. If so, why on earth are you grubbing around in the junk mail? That's what bulk is for, to keep you from having to deal with this stuff.

I agree with DrdB and EdM - I was searching this same question because I have received phishing emails in my regular inbox, NOT my spam box. So your assumption that anyone getting those must be "getting them out of your junk mail" is ludicrous. And why was your answer chosen as the best one???

How can you tell a phishing email from a real one?

Have you ever gotten a phishing email? I'm pretty sure I've gotten at least one now.

How did you deal with it? What's the proper protocol for dealing with it?

Are you supposed to report these emails to someone? How can you tell a phishing email from a real one?
DELETE IT. Do not reply, do not forward, just delete it.

You can tell if you are getting a phishing e-mail by checking the photos in the e-mail by right-clicking them and viewing their properties. That will show you where the photo is coming from on the internet. If it from a top level domain you trust (ie. www.ebay.com) then it is fine.

True e-mails will never ask you to validate your credit card number or any personal information.

Also read the e-mail carefully, if there are grammar mistakes, even slight ones, it is probably a phishing e-mail.

Last of all, DELETE it immediately. If you reply or forward this e-mail, the person who sent it will know they have a live e-mail address and bombard you with e-mails or sell your address to shady marketing departments who use these live e-mail addresses to spam you.How can you tell a phishing email from a real one?

You can contact your business it's supposedly from and let them know it is happening. If it was anything serious the company would send you something in the mail about it anyways and there really not trust me they back up all your information every day or every few days.

  • I have an email address through Hotmail. What is the different between junk\report phishing scam.?

When I delete messages that are crap, what should I put that under, junk or report phishing scam. I have no idea what the difference is.I have an email address through Hotmail. What is the different between junk\report phishing scam.?
Junk is just emails trying to sell you stuff. A phishing scam is an email that pretends to be from a bank, or another organisation, and gives you a link to 'verify security details', or similar. The link takes you to a site that looks identical to the site of the bank, but is infact owned by scammers, and entering your details will send it to them.I have an email address through Hotmail. What is the different between junk\report phishing scam.?
Your question isn't very clear, but I'll do my best to answer it for you.

Phishing (pronounced "fishing") means just that...someone is phishing for information, whether it be a credit card number, and account number, a pin number, etc. Phishing is literally combing a computer or network's files to obtain confidential information for (usually) clandestine or illegal purposes.

Junk mail is unsolicited mail you receive as a result of someone selling your email address to them for marketing purposes. It's really no different from the result you get from placing a business card in a fishbowl drawing at a restaurant or store.

The scams you are concerned about almost always direct you to click a hyperlink of some kind, which takes you to a site outside of email, where they hope you will be foolish enough to supply them with personal information, including bank account numbers, credit card numbers, etc.

The best defenses you can utilize to protect yourself are these: don't open email that is from a sender you don't recognize and NEVER click on a link that takes you outside of email.

    Best of luck to you.

Phishing, Scam and Fraud What is the Difference?

Phishing, Scam and Fraud What is the Difference?Phishing, Scam and Fraud What is the Difference?
Phishing is usually done by email or websites (electronically) where a scenario is created which requires the user to enter their details. The details are then used for illegal means.

Scams can be verbal, or visual, where the user is deceived into believing something which isn't true. It does not require the user to give out details - it could just be tricking them into paying more money for a product than the product is worth etc.

Fraud is similar to a scam, but usually involved impersonation - e.g identity fraud.

In effect, scams and frauds are very similar, and can usually be used to describe the same or similar scenarios. However, phishing has slight subtle differences to the others in that it's done electronically and the aim is to obtain someone's personal (financial) details.Phishing, Scam and Fraud What is the Difference?
Phishing is normally attempting to get important information from someone. Using a fake e-mail to retrieve someones password or e-mail account or credit card number and pin, for example. Fishing for information.

Scam is usually when a dealer misrepresents information the a buyer in order to swindle the unknowing buyer. Placing a product on a shady website and listing the information incorrectly on purpose to make a crappy product seem better than it is, while selling it much higher than it should be. This is a scam. Fraud is using false information to deceive someone with negative intent. Basically scamming is fraud, and phishing is fraud.

At least, to my knowledge that's the "differences" between them. They're all similar.Phishing, Scam and Fraud What is the Difference?
Scam and Fraud are the same thing. Phishing is when someone contacts you by mail, phone or email trying to gather personal information - passwords, user names, bank account details, credit card numbers, your full name, birthdate, etc

You have a virus program, as "phishing", icon located in the bottom of your tray will only scan the webpage to make sure the page is real. Will never re-direct you to another webpage.

If you don't have an antiviurs program here is an excellent free one.

Here is an excellent from antivirus program from AOL, Active Virus Shield powred by Kaspersky Lab of Russia. Rated # 1 in the world for virus detection. You will get auto updates every hour on the hour, plus an excellent background scanner that really works great. AOL, will only ask you for your email so they can send you a free key good for one year. After one year just request a new key.

If you want to turn off the phishing, just open the icon in the try and turn off. Will increase the speed of webpage surfing.

Phishers will sometimes use a brand that most people have had some experience with at one time or another. I got one in my inbox that had the Bank of America logo. I think there're a lot of people that have had an account with B of A at one time or another. In my case, not since childhood, so it raised my suspicions.

My advice would be not to input any information into any website unless you logged onto it or you've called to check on it's authenticity. The phishing websites are VERY convincing looking.

What is the difference between phishing and scam?

I've searched on the internet but there's so many different answers it's beginning to confuse me. Loads say they're the same, others say there's a slight difference but don't say the difference.

Please can somebody help me :]What is the difference between phishing and scam?
Well if you look at both of them:

In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT Administrators are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting public. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging,[1] and it often directs users to enter details at a fake website whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one. Even when using server authentication, it may require tremendous skill to detect that the website is fake. Phishing is an example of social engineering techniques used to fool users,[2] and exploits the poor usability of current web security technologies.[3] Attempts to deal with the growing number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, public awareness, and technical security measures.

A scam is a dishonest attempt to trap you into parting wth your money. Unfortunately we have all experienced being cheated in one way or another, and we all know how it feels.

A 'scammer' may make a personal approach, with an offer too good to be true. Someone may email you, phone, text-message or post an offer that they press you to take up.What is the difference between phishing and scam?

scam according to me is sending fake mails and taking advantage only if you click on them. What is the difference between phishing and scam?
Phishing is a type of scam.

A scam just refers to any fraudulent activity involving trickery.

Phishing is a very specific type of fraudulent activity. It involves pretending to be a legitimate business in order to get you to click on a link and divulge personal information.

For example, you may get an email from your "bank" (not really your bank--just an email to pretending to be from your bank) saying there's a problem with your account and asking you to verify your information. They say you should click on this link to go to the website. The link, instead of going to your real bank's website, goes to this fake bank website, and if you type in your birthdate and social security number, the phishing scammer can then steal your identity.

Never reply to anything like that, reason is when you do they then know your e-mail address is live and being used so they can pass it on to other spammers

It can be difficult to find the right webpage for reporting fraudulent emails. I need to write all this down for future reference just for myself too.

    Here is the Yahoo Webpage:

    http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/securit鈥?/a>

    Where they say:

    ===== quote begin:

If you receive one of these emails, mark it as spam, including any messages that originate from a yahoo.com email address. These emails are usually sent in bulk, and are rarely targeted at a specific individual. Yahoo cannot investigate these scams; reporting these emails as spam is the most effective measure you can take as it will help ensure additional copies are not delivered.

    ===== quote end

Now if the email originated from a Yahoo member, there is also another webpage for reporting that member:

'Cause they know your IP adress, so if they know your information is fake, what will they do? Just not let you watch their videos? Or what? What happens if you fill out fake information on a phishing site survey?
Just because they know your IP address doesn't mean that they know who you are. When you look up someone's IP it just gives the name of the country they live in, the state, and town it is located in doesn't included a personal information like your name, age address or phone number.

If you fill it out with false information they won't know and if you use real information it would probably result in more spam in your mail box both online and your one next to your street more telemarketers and if you give them anything big like SSN or credit card your just asking for ID theft.

Someone please explain to me what phishing is, and what would this YAHOO LOTTERY INTL INC stand to gain?

I received this Lottery winning e-mail from Yahoo Lottery INTL INC.

I know it is a scam, just curious what do these scam artists get out of it? And what is Phishing? Did I spell that right?Someone please explain to me what phishing is, and what would this YAHOO LOTTERY INTL INC stand to gain?
    1. Yes, you got phishing spelled correctly. Here's what that means: An attempt to steal passwords and private account information through fake web sites and emails that look like those of trusted companies. A phishing web site or email can look identical to the real thing, so it can be hard to tell that it's fake. Phishing schemes can also use instant messages, typically when an account is compromised. In this case, the fraudster sends phishing messages to the contacts in the account's Messenger or friend list.

    2. That message is both a fake and an outright fraud. Don't give the phishers any of your personal information at all. Spam that scam message straight into oblivion right away. This is one lottery you'll never win because it's "bogus."

Another thing, the phishers telling you to "keep this lottery information confidential" would indicate to you not to say anything about this to anybody until they have finished scamming you.Someone please explain to me what phishing is, and what would this YAHOO LOTTERY INTL INC stand to gain?
The scam is if you fall for it and believe you actually won. Some ask you to cash a check they send to cover part of the supposed winnings tax. They ask you to money gram or western union a portion back to them for those taxes which if you do, you've just sent them good money.

Their check is worthless and the person who receives it packs up and moves to another scam location so they can collect a whole lot of real money from suckers before you know the checks are fake.

I've seen people who spent off of these bogus checks have to pay back thousands of dollars to the bank once the check is returned.Someone please explain to me what phishing is, and what would this YAHOO LOTTERY INTL INC stand to gain?
You can scam someone for all sorts of crap, their credit card number, personal info, you could infect their computer with all sorts of privacy infringing programs, all that.

Phishing is copying a real website so that it looks almost identical but is fake, so anything you give that site can be used to steal your information.

For example, say you wanted to order something off BestBuy.com. You would pick your items, and check out. And you would give your credit card information right?

Now what if I made a totally fake copy of BestBuy.com, where the credit card information just went to me, so I could use it to buy anything I wanted on your money.

    That's phishing.
FUrther ading to FLAKS answer a phishing site domain is not the same i can be slightly diferent to fool the surfers amy be the phishing site of BESTBUYS.COM COULD BE BEST-BUYS.COM.

So you will be left confused wihich one is the real one hence to keep a check on it look for a "lock sign" at the bottom of the window in case you are using Internet Explorer . The lock is dspalyed in yellow color.

What is the difference between Phishing and Hacking?

How phishing is related to hacking. What is the difference between Phishing and Hacking?
Phishing is when you are led to a fake website, such as a fake bank website where someone can get your details when you log on.

Hacking is when someone uses software or some other special device that allows someone to enter a users computer without them knowing (or knowing) to get information.

Phishing and hacking are related in that they both are ways of obtaining info whether it being volountary (input on a website) or involountary (where someone has taken over your system to get what they want)

You're being "phished" when you're led to a fake website, for example, after typing the wrong link. Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox both have a anti-phishing feature for user's safety.

You're being hacked when a hacker has somehow gained access to your computer via internet, obtained personal information, and turned your computer into a zombie system that works to serve his/her needs. A Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), an installed firewall program, and a router firewall are good methods of protecting ur comp from these hackers.

Phishing could be considered a form of cracking, but it's trapping somebody in, hacking is using exploits to gain access to something you do not normally have access to.

Cracking is getting passwords by testing passwords until you get them, you can either use dictionary entries or a brute force method(aaaa, aaab, aaac, aaad ... bcde, bcdf, ...)

Phishing is like... Putting a bomb in a package that somebody is expecting from amazon.
