How do tell if a website is safe to register on ( to avoid phishing scams)?

In order to avoid phishing, what should I look out for on a website?

Especially when registering on a website.

I'm not talking about vague signs like if the web design looks legit or things like if there's plenty of 'secure website' , 'tested daily' , paypal logo %26amp; etc.

What are real signs that a website is safe to register on?

Signs that indicate that the information entered to register will not be used to hack personal accounts. How do tell if a website is safe to register on ( to avoid phishing scams)?
If you are using Internet Explorer 8 or up as your browser look in the Address Bar, the actual domain name of the site will be bolded and blacker.

As Microsoft themselves says:

"Internet Explorer 8 makes it easier for consumers to tell which site they are on and aid them in identifying phishing sites and other deceptive sites by highlighting the domain name of the URL string in the Address Bar in bold text. The domain name is in black, standing out from other characters in the URL, which are gray."

So in other words *yahoo*.com or answers.*yahoo*.com would be good but yahoo.*acme*.com would be very suspicious (where the name inside the * * is what would be in bold and black in real life).

Also make sure your browsers phishing filter is "on". IE now calls theirs "Smart Screen Filter".

And of course never ever respond to an e-mail that wants any kind of personal information, even something that sounds innocent like "Verify your Facebook password." These criminals know that most people use the exact same password for everything and since Facebook requires the use of an e mail address for a username...well you can guess the rest.
The main one is make sure any page you enter information on is an "https:" page instead of an "http:" type page.

Others are to makes sure the logos and icons are actual links to paypal, security sites, shipping companies, etc instead of just copy/paste icons like the fake sites have.

Check out the who-is, does the information there match what the site claims, information such as registration date, registration name and registration address.

Then, whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. The simple solution is to get a second 'throw away' email address and use that whenever you register, or 'fill in the blanks, or whatever. Then do no release any personal information until you are sure.

Also, always look for the closed padlock to be certain of a secure and encrypted site such as those of (real) banks.
Three things which may help:

1. Look for mangled English spelling, grammar and/or punctuation.

2. Use a web site rating program - I recommend the free Web of Trust (WOT).

3. Use the free ClearCloud DNS service, which will automatically block all known phishing sites. How do tell if a website is safe to register on ( to avoid phishing scams)?
