Can anyone explain to me what is phishing?

Phishing is a form of spam, except that it is designed to extract information from you, such as:

your email and snail mail address

passwords to sites you are a member of

credit card information

bank account information

In other words, these emails "fish" for information. They are often disguised to look like legitimate emails from sites you are a member of. If you have a Citibank account, a PayPal account, an eBay account, and so forth, you may receive an email that LOOKS just like it came from the site. But they are fakes.

NEVER give out your passwords or bank information by clicking on any link in an email that asks for such information. None of the "real" and legitimate sites will ever ask for such information through an email with a link in it. Don't even click on the links! If in doubt, all sites will usually have a "report spam/phishing" email contact, and you can always forward a suspicious email to them for verification. Hope that helps! Can anyone explain to me what is phishing?
Comes from the analogy that internet scammers are using email bait to fish for passwords and financial data from the sea of internet users. Since hackers have a tendancy of replacing "f" with "ph", the term phishing was derived. The term has evolved over the years to include not only obtaining user account details but access to all personal and financial data.
"In order to verify your Yahoo! Answer question, you will need to provide me with your account name and password." - exampleCan anyone explain to me what is phishing?
Phishing is the practice whereby a fraudster pretends to be from a legitimate organisation, and sends misleading emails requesting personal and financial details from unsuspecting people. See source for details.
The act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. Can anyone explain to me what is phishing?
I know it has to do something with scamers on the internet. Why cant they think of something better to do.
Phishing is the act of attempting to acquire personal information from people by false pretenses.

For example if I called you on your phone and said I was a represensitive from your bank and wanted to verify your account informaion and asked you what is the account number currently on your checks.

Phishing can be in the form of a phone call, email, IM or even just someone that questions you in a Mall under the pretense of being a Marketing Surveyor.

Most commonly it is used to describe people that attempt to get personal information from you on the internet.
WHen you're dancing at a Phish concert. To bad they broke up.
hoooooo
Internet Phishing is when scammers try to lure e-mail users into clicking on links to try and steal personal and private information that causes identity theft. Most

e-mails CLAIM to be from legitimate companies, but really AREN'T. It's a scammers way of hurting respected companies while destroying reputations in the process. NEVER click on any e-mails that you don't personally know yourself, like what company sent it, or who it may have come from unless you REALLY know it was sent to you. Also keep in mind to NEVER click on links, because then that signals to scammers that your e-mail address is indeed active.

What is trojan nd phishing scam ?

how can we alert for phishing emailWhat is trojan nd phishing scam ?
Those are used to trace the personal information like Access Codes and Data.

Trojan: A Trojan is a program that may appear to be legitimate, but in fact does something malicious. Trojans are often used to gain backdoor access - that is to say remote, surreptitious access, to a user's system. Trojans do not replicate as viruses do, nor make copies of themselves as worms do.

Phishing method: Phishing is a way of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. What is trojan nd phishing scam ?
Watch the movie Troy to get and idea about 'Trojan Horse'.

Trojan: A program that you run willingly to let someone hack you.

Phishing: A website meant to hack your online account.

Do not use 'pirate' software and check email source to protect yourself from these scams. If any email asks you to enter your login details for security purpose , delete that email and probably block the sender. Also beware of links in your email. What is trojan nd phishing scam ?
trojan - its a kind of file that act as a legitimate file and it does some malicious behaviour and creates a backdoor for future attacks on ur system so be careful with TROJAN

  • Does anyone know about cryhike.com? I assume it is spam or phishing?

A friend of mine had someone tell her that her pictures from facebook were on cryhike.com. When you go to the site, it immediately tells her that it has detected photos from her ip address have been recently uploaded to the site. In order to see the photos, it wants you to fill out a form with name, email address, etc. I went to the site and it did the same thing. Does anyone know what this site is? I assume that its spam or a phishing attempt.Does anyone know about cryhike.com? I assume it is spam or phishing?
It certainly is. The domain name was created by someone named Victoria David in Las Vegas who has registered other sites exactly like this one.

The information for this site says "THE PIC IS OF A MONKEY - THIS IS A HARMLESS PRANK SITE" but if it was just a prank they wouldn't be asking for your name and email address.Does anyone know about cryhike.com? I assume it is spam or phishing?
Be careful with this kind of lure message:

A new virus is spreading through Facebook %26amp; other "Social Networking" sites.

The Koobface -- a worm designed specifically to spread over social-networking sites -- is blasting spam messages out to Facebook members. The motive is to enable hijacking and click fraud.

The messages offer subject lines like "You look so funny on our new video" or similar enticing words, and offer a link to a video site that pretends to have a movie clip. When the user follows the link, they are redirected to one of many different compromised hosts, where the user is urged to download or open a file named flash_player.exe. That file is a new Koobface variant.

Anything remotely resembling this kind of crud should be marked 'Spam' and deleted via that method.Does anyone know about cryhike.com? I assume it is spam or phishing?
exactly what the people above said.

    What is a Phishing Scam?

I have an option with my e-mail inbox where I can report a phishing scam within the junk menu. What is a Phishing Scam? What is a Phishing Scam?
If you get an email from an organisation trying to get you to part with banking details and passwords - that's phishing.

No reputable bank will ask you to supply these details through an email or in whole.
It's when you use feathers or brightly coloured objects as bait when fishing instead of worms, protect the fish from being scammedWhat is a Phishing Scam?
Phishing is something that is designed to make you hand over your personal details, it may be a password or something even like a credit card number. Or it could even be someone trying to get money from you for some strange reason like they are in debt or something strange.
A phishing scam is a website that pretends to help you out with something so you give them your details. Then they take your details and do things with them. e.g passwords, logins for websites, and others. What is a Phishing Scam?
usually when a website or an email looks like a real email or website from a real company. What phishing is, is that it tries to trick people to give their information to people that you may not know and steal your banking information or other private stuff. They cause lots of identity theft, so if you report an email as a "phisher" you help you email client get rid of email of the same sender and other people's mailboxes as well.
An email trying to con you into giving it info or cash. They also

put false web sites up.Like Yahoo to get your passwords and

    get into your pc.
Its where you recieve email from people who are pretending to be a paticular site, for example, eBay, when you recieve a message that looks to be from eBay and has the same layout it could be from anyone using different, cleverly worded websites that include the word eBay to make you think when you click on a link from that paticular email that you are on the real thing..

E.g. Using eBay again, From this fake email you have recieved (unaware) you then click on sign in for example, when you enter your details, the scammers can use your details to sign in on the REAL site and commit fraud.

It easy to tell though if you know the address you should be visiting and try not to follow links but type them yourself. Half the time there lame *** attempts that can be spotted a mile off.
A phishing scam is an identity theft scam that arrives via email. The email appears to come from a legitimate source such as a trusted business or financial institution, and includes an urgent request for personal information usually invoking some critical need to update an account immediately. Clicking on a link provided in the email leads to an official-looking website. Personal information provided to this site, however, goes directly to the scam artist.

Fraud is a growing problem on the internet as people are tricked into providing personal information including credit card numbers, passwords, Mother’s maiden name, bank account numbers, ATM pass codes and social security numbers. Virus protectors and firewalls do not catch most phishing scams because they do not contain suspect code, while spam filters let them pass because they appears to come from legitimate sources.

The links included in phishing scams take the unsuspecting person to a fraudulent website designed to mimic the real thing, often down to the smallest detail including copyright notices, submenu titles and so on. It’s virtually impossible for most people to tell they are the target of a phisher by looking at the site alone. However, clues in the address can sometimes reveal the deception.

Similar looking characters might be substituted in the spelling of the link for the real character so that a “1” (numeral one) is used in place of a lower-case “L.” For example, phishers have used paypa1.com rather than paypal.com. Other times an IP address – a numerical address – is used to hide the fact that the link is not taking the victim to the real site. However, phishing scams have become so sophisticated that phishers can also appear to be using legitimate links, right down to the real site’s security certificate.

The best way to protect yourself from phishing scams is to avoid supplying personal information to an email request. If you believe the request might be legitimate, call the company’s customer service department to verify this before providing any information, but do not use phone numbers contained in the email (if any are included). Even if the request is legitimate, manually enter the required address in your browser rather than clicking on a link, as a phisher scam could conceivably run concurrent with legitimate business.

For example, in early April 2005 a mass emailing that appeared to be from Microsoft Corporation urged recipients to download a much anticipated security update. Those that clicked on the link in the email were taken to a site that looked like a legitimate Microsoft update site. However, instead of updating their software they were actually downloading a Trojan horse (a remote access program that can steal personal information). Microsoft does not use email notification in this way but many were caught unaware.

The famous “letter from Nigeria” was another type of phishing scam. This type of scam is so prevalent, it has its own name: 419 scam. The phisher pretends to be a Nigerian official in distress requiring a U.S. bank account to offload money. The person who allowed temporary use of their account would receive a handsome reward. Instead those who provided their banking information become victims of theft.

PC World reported that research firm Gartner found phishing scams are costing consumers $2 billion a year. While the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and others have concentrated on public education, the Anti-Phishing Act of 2005 was proposed by U.S. Senator Patrick Leahey (D- Vermont). This would make the creation and use of email addresses and websites that are intended to spoof legitimate businesses for purpose of procuring personal information punishable by fines and jail time. However, catching phishers is difficult. Fraudulent sites operate for very short periods of time and scams are often run from other countries. In March 2005 Microsoft filed 117 phishing lawsuits in the Western District of Washington with unnamed defendants.

The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) is an international organization of volunteers working to track phishing scams. Their website keeps an online database of fraudulent emails submitted to them. You can check this site for new scams, or send them phisher email you receive. The APWG is largely an information hub but they do provide links to consumer resources. The FTC also has advice for consumers, an email address for reporting phishing, plus a form to report identity theft.

Companies that have been spoofed by phishing scams include: Microsoft Corp., MSN, eBay, Amazon.com, PayPal, AOL, Comcast, CitiBank, Wells Fargo Bank, Bank of America, Washington Mutual, and many more.
When someone send you an email saying that you won something or they will give you Millions of dolars but they need all your personal banking stuff to put the money in there

in other words, you give them your personal bank stuff and they just take all your cash away
ways to avoid being scammed by a fish is to never login to your account using a link in an e-mail always type the link in your browser and login manually.
A phishing scam is phony website made to look like a genuine one. The usual procedure is to send an e-mail to you supposedly from your bank/Pay pal/Ebay/building society etc.requesting details. This mail will have an instruction to click on a link which will take you to a website that has been carefully constructed to look like the genuine article. On this website you will be asked all manner of details, bank account No. password etc.

Quite often there will be a "frightener" such as "Your account will be frozen if you do not respond".

None of the institutions I have mentioned will ever send you an e-mail with such a link,so NEVER ever click on such a link and never ever give any details away or you will find your bank balance at zero or have your identity stolen to open other accounts, get credit etc.

What is a Phishing Filter and why should I turn it on?

Internet Explorer 7 offers dynamic security protection to help keep you safe online. Most users are unaware of how much personal, traceable data is transmitted with every click of the mouse while they are browsing the web and most online users are likely to have trouble discerning a valid website from a bogus copy. A technique used by many malicious website operators to gather personal information is known as phishing — masquerading online as a legitimate person or business for the purpose of acquiring sensitive information (e.g., a credit card or social security number).

Developers of phishing and other malicious activities thrive on lack of communication and limited sharing of information. Using an online service that is updated several times an hour, the new Phishing Filter in Internet Explorer 7 consolidates the latest industry information about fraudulent websites and shares it with you to proactively warn and help protect you while you browse.

The Phishing Filter is turned on by default when you first use Internet Explorer 7. For Phishing Filter options, including turning it on or off, reporting a suspicious site to Microsoft, and more, go to the Tools menu in the upper-right toolbar, and select Phishing Filter. What is a Phishing Filter and why should I turn it on?

it is someone sending you an e-mail that looks real and asks you to update your security or enter your user name and password anything that will ask you for personel information! Always type in the site you want to go to in your browser then you can be sure you are really on the site you want to go to!In lame-man terms what is "Phishing" mean concerning Internet safety?
Phishing is illegally trying to obtain a person's password or other personal information (such as bank account details) by posing as trustworthy entity.

For example, someone would send you an email claming to be from PayPal and feed you some story about losing your details on their computer system. They then ask you for your bank account details so they can re-input it into the system again. Once they have your details they just empty your account. The stories they make up vary, as well as the company they are posing as (PayPal and eBay are the most targeted), but they end result is they same, they want to trick you into giving them details they can use to get your money. In lame-man terms what is "Phishing" mean concerning Internet safety?
    as simple as it gets?

they send you a email pretending to be somone else to trick you into giving them stuff like your password or credit card
they dont always have to email you though..the most common way and the one that will probably affect you is phishing done on myspace...you've prolly seen it, you randomly start getting messages/comments from friends advertising sites/products? it basically just means their accounts been taken over cos someone has their password...easily resolved (on myspace anyway) by changing your password...

  • Please explain what "land phishing" is?

I know that phishing is when someone steals someones usernames, passwords, or credit cards. I heard that land phishing is when someone steals someone else's downloaded programs or music or something. I don't know if this is right. Please explain. Please explain what "land phishing" is?
i think you mean LAN phishing. Say you hook up to a public network at a coffee shop etc. You are on the local area network (LAN) hosted by the coffee shop to allow internet access. Depending on your computers settings it is possible for people to look at music, videos and other things used, for instance by windows media player. A more experienced phisher may actually have the ability to access more but the bottom line is you should set your connection preferences to disallow local area network sharing and even homegroup options if you're out in public. If you use a router at home make sure you secure it with WPA2 because it is very easy to crack wep and possible to crack wpa, and then they can work away on your own home network. Please explain what "land phishing" is?
    Not quite...

'phishing' is where an attempt to lure the victim to a link, or website, with the intention of getting them to install some malware. That then can lead to stealing passwords or what have you (depends on what the payload is).

'Spear phishing" is a more focused lure is presented; for instance someone posts on YouTube, they attended the company picnic this July, and the phisher sends an e-mail to that person saying "I have some great shots of you and James (another co-worker) at the picnic, click the link to see them...", where upon the victim thinks it's genuine (because it's so accurate) and clicks the link.

I've not heard of "land" phishing...maybe Google the term?

"CS..." may be onto the idea.

Firesheep (a Firefox add-on) allows passive monitoring of LAN traffic, with the easy to annex 'session cookie' that let's them log in as the victim. Please explain what "land phishing" is?

If all you want is a single word, then it would probably be: Bait or Trolling

Both words refer to fishing terms, and both refer to luring victims to the 'hook'.

What is meant by the term phishing?

Basically - it is 'fishing' - trying to catch something or someone.

It is a type of deception designed to steal your valuable personal data, such as credit card numbers, IDs, other account data and passwords, or other information.

Examples of phishing scams could be:

    鈥n e-mail messages,

鈥n a Web site that accepts donations for charity but is a fake.

鈥n Web sites that spoof your familiar sites using slightly different Web addresses, hoping you won't notice - they may just change once character in their name eg St Andrew's Building Society may become Snt Andrew's Building Society in the fake site.

    鈥n your mobile phone

You will usually find that these kind of scams place a link in e-mail messages etc that appear to come from a service that you trust, like your bank, credit card company.

Hope this helps you. As usual - don't disclose PINs or ID info etc to ANYONE on the net. And if someone tells you you have a million dollars waiting to be collected ... just give me your account and PIN nos ... well, you know what to do ... and you will now recognise it as ... Phishing is an act of sending an e-mail to user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam users into surrendering private information that will be used for theft. In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

Phishing is just like it sounds...you are dangling something out there that looks appealing, such as a worm on a hook, or a fake myspace log in page. In a nutshell, it is a legitimate looking website or service that has intentions to stell personal info by duping.

What is the point of a phishing filter?

and do i need one? What is the point of a phishing filter?
The point of a phishing filter is to help prevent phishing. Phishing is a way criminals get your personal information and committ identity theft. Phishing is basically getting your personal info under false pretenses. They make a fake page look just like a real page, like ebay for example, you give them your credit card number, and they max them out.

  • What is meant by phishing?

    Hello,

Many of my friends are talking about phishing. Can anybody tell me what is phishing?

    thanks.What is meant by phishing?
Phishing is a new word produced from 'fishing', it refers to the act that the attacker allure users to visit a faked Web site by sending them faked e-mails (or instant messages), and stealthily get victim's personal information such as user name, password, and national security ID, etc.

These information then can be used for future target advertisements or even identity theft attacks (e.g., transfer money from victims' bank account).

The frequently used attack method is to send e-mails to potential victims, which seemed to be sent by banks, online organizations, or ISPs.
Besides authentic looking e-mails, phishing may also refer to authentic looking websites (bank websites usually) but with their address different. These websites would look very much as the original ones but if you check their address you'd see that there is not https:// at their beginning and they usually ask in one form or another for your personal information that will help them steal you money basically.

All phishing scams are though based on the fooling of regular users to believe that the data information they are required to give is safe. This is why all banks say that they will never ask you for any such information over the web. What is meant by phishing?
Phishing is a scam that aims to steal people's identity, or acquire sensitive personal information; for example some spammers may use an email that looks authentic, in order to trick the email recipients into providing information that is personal, such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, user names and/or passwords.

TechCrunch is a well-known technology reporting site.

The Microsoft Jobs Blog does not list the site, but does list articles elsewhere on the web about Microsoft hiring:

According to DomainTools, Microsoft does own "microsoftjobsblog.com" so it's not a phony site:

    And Microsoft also owns "msdn.com"

I looked elsewhere on other links and they seem to be one of many advertising jobs, like a temp agency would or a recruiter would.

What program reported this site as "forbidden" ? Did the site require you to provide your Social Security Number ? Unfortunately, temp agencies like Adecco. Several years ago I went to an Adecco office and they would not let me enter my information in their own offices, I had to use the Internet !

Good luck with the job hunt !

Uhm well a phishing website is a fake website people make that trick you into thinking it is a site you normally go to. For example, myspace: a phishing website for myspace would look like myspace, but it wouldn't actually be part of myspace. the point of these sites is to trick you into revealing your username and password, which is sent to a database where hackers use them to log in as you and oh say.. spam other people.
uh, yeah. unless of course you like having your information stolen. Phishing is basically, a person of ill repute, puts up a phony page that looks like the real thing, and waits for some unsuspecting person to type in thier password or other personal information. "Fishing for information"

they can use this information to steal your identity (It took me two years to recover from it when they "caught " me so...

YES TURN ON YOUR PHISHING FILTER!

    hope its not too late.

you can also help others by reporting phishing sites. type Phishing into your browser and educate yourself so you can spot them.
phisihing is when a fake website acts like a real website like a banking website and asks for your personal information like credit card numbers, bank account passwords, and other information you wouldn't tell anyone. so just let the computer check it to be sure.

in some cases, phishing sites are pages that look identical to your regular log in page. (this happens a lot on myspace) the only difference is the address. they get your login and password, then use it to spam your friends with advertisements and crap. other, more dangerous, phishing sites do take your credit card info, SS#, address... all kinds of things. they can use this to steal your identity or your money. What is HTML.Phishing.Bank-485 virus?

Yesterday, I received one email mentioning that my PayPal account should be updated. I suspect that it's not from PayPal itself. So, I decided to send it to my friend to ask what is this. When I sent it, my email is rejected from email server mentioning that my email is infected by HTML.Phishing.Bank-485 virus.

    What is HTML.Phishing.Bank-485 virus?

Is it only on that email or it's transformed in my computer as well? What is HTML.Phishing.Bank-485 virus?
The virus is not in your machine, it is strictly contained in the email. The email is HTML formatted and within the HTML code, there's phishing routines embedded in it. Most likely one of the URLs (links) in the email points to a phishing site that asks for your PayPal info. Discard the email (and any attachments if it came with it) and you're done.

Also, for future reference, learn to how to view full headers (depending on your client, it might say "Message Source"). Just because the "from" says "service@paypal.com", doesn't mean it actually originated at PayPal. View the full headers and look for Return-Path, Message-ID, and review the Received headers (especially the one with the HELO statement - that HELO info will contain the actual name and/or IP address of the server that sent the email to your server.. if it doesn't say PayPal, dump it!).

Phishing is the act of tricking someone into giving them confidential information or tricking them into doing something that they normally wouldn鈥檛 do or shouldn鈥檛 do. For example: sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft.

What exactly is phishing, i don't know much about computers, so would like to know what it means?

In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT Administrators are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting public. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging, and it often directs users to enter details at a fake website whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one. Even when using server authentication, it may require tremendous skill to detect that the website is fake. Phishing is an example of social engineering techniques used to fool users, and exploits the poor usability of current web security technologies.Attempts to deal with the growing number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, public awareness, and technical security measures.

    Example

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co鈥?/a>What exactly is phishing, i don't know much about computers, so would like to know what it means?
A type of scam where someone pretends to be a real person/company/agency (such as pretending to be someone from a bank), to try to steal your personal information, credit card info, etc.
In fishing, you go to the lake, drop a worm in and hope a fish is stupid enough to bite so you can catch it.

In phishing you create web site or send emails hoping to catch people stupid enough to give you their bank details so you can steal their money. What exactly is phishing, i don't know much about computers, so would like to know what it means?
Sending a generic fake email to millions of random email addresses with the intention of getting a reply to either: a) confirm the address is in use so that adverts can be spammed to it, or b) to extract personal details with the intention to defraud the person.
Phishing is a fraudulent way of getting information from people, through web sites and a clever disguise. Here's the basic mechanism: say you try to log in to Yahoo! Answers, but the password you know is correct fails. Upon closer inspection, the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of the site is a perfect replica, but the URL (the address) is different, even in a small tiny way (in this case, let's say it's answer.yahoo.com). And now whoever created that website now has your username and password for your Yahoo Answers account if not your entire Yahoo account. Most well known browsers (Windows IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome [a bit, it's still fairly new to the browser game]) have anti-phishing filters, which screen you out of well-known phishing sites. But the example I'm talking about is just one of many. See the link below for more. Ways to prevent it: sound security techniques. Sadly, some anti-virus suites don't have anti-phishing tech yet. Just make sure that whenever you have to input a password that it is in the correct address. Some sites employ seals for enhanced security, I know that Yahoo! does it for their mail and other login services. I hope this helps! What exactly is phishing, i don't know much about computers, so would like to know what it means?
Phising is dangerous. The liar copy the legal site like banks, gov and so on.

What is Hacking? What is Spyware? What is Malware? What is Spam? What is Vulnerabilities? What is Phishing?

How Hackers can stole information from any web site or p c? What is cybercrime?

Are any Hackers taking control of any p c permanently? Does Any Hacker know yahoo chat, what conversation is going on in Yahoo Messenger? What is Hacking? What is Spyware? What is Malware? What is Spam? What is Vulnerabilities? What is Phishing?
Hacking is when someone from another location breaks into your computer remotely to cause damage or steal information.

Spyware is a program running in the background on your computer that gathers information, or forces you to websites.

Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. Its only there to break stuff.

Spam is an unwanted advertisement for a product sent to your computer as either pop-up window from your web browser or as an e-mail.

Phishing is when a website is made to look like another website for the purpose of gathering personal information from a user.

Vulnerabilities are any security holes you may have in your own system.

Cyber crime is the act of stealing information via the Internet. It is possible for Hackers to steal information from websites, however most are protected against it.

Hackers cannot permanently control your PC, they will only control it as long as its plugged up to the Internet and whatever ever programs they put on it are allowed to run.

It is possible for a good hacker to break into yahoo chat, or any chat or e-mail program for that matter. But they would probably have a hard time doing so.What is Hacking? What is Spyware? What is Malware? What is Spam? What is Vulnerabilities? What is Phishing?

What is phishing and example of website for organised phising?

    What is Phishing?

Phishing is the act of sending an email to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. The email directs the user to visit a website where they are asked to update personal information such as password, national insurance number and bank accounting details. The email may further suggest that the information is necessary to prevent the account from being suspended.

With this information the fraudster can do a number of things that include stealing the identity of the person who provided the information in the first place to undertaking attacks on that persons bank account.

The email is sent to a large group of people, seeking out account users. The scam relies on the contents of the email request being adhered to by the account users and the details provided.

A recent survey revealed that between January 2004 and June 2004, 1.5 million phishing e-mails were sent out. More than a quarter of a million were sent in the month of June alone.

The number of active phishing sites reported in November 2004 was 1518. The average monthly growth in phishing sites from July 2004 to November 2004 is 28%.

It is worthy of note that 5% of recipients respond to spam emails. As a result of a response, a new identity is created using the details provided and fraud is committed on the new identity.

The use of the phishing medium as a money laundering tool appears to be emerging, where volumes of compromised user data is sold to crime groups who aggregate the stolen funds into centralised false accounts by a principal organiser or “dump leader”. The use of false employment websites, encouraging users to sign up and provide their banking facilities to forward money to other accounts for a 20% administration fee has also been revealed. What is phishing and example of website for organised phising?
Phishing is stealing account and personal info from another computer which is illegal. What is phishing and example of website for organised phising?
In computing, phishing is a form of criminal activity using social engineering techniques. It is characterized by attempts to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy person or business in an apparently official electronic communication. Phishing is typically carried out using email or an instant message, though it has more recently exploited fax. The term phishing derives from password harvesting and the use of increasingly sophisticated lures to "fish" for users' financial information and passwords.

With the growing number of reported phishing incidents, additional methods of protection are needed. Attempts include legislation, user training, and technical measures. What is phishing and example of website for organised phising?
Here is a simple video explaining it.

Phising means when say for example bebo, this is when a hacker creates a web page exactly like bebo but it is fake. so when you type ur details in the hacker will get them. Its more or less a website that hackers try to copy so they can get your details. What is phishing website?
Phishing means making fake pages of a website. For example making fake login page of facebook or Yahoo or blogger or any. This is most useful and easy for the hackers. Hackers generate fake message and send to the users.

    What is phishing website?
Phishing is when someone attempts to get your secret information, like passwords or social security number, etc., by pretending to be a website that you go to frequently, like your bank, but it's really a fake bank website, and when you enter in your password, it doesn't go to the bank, it goes to the criminal instead, and then they use it to empty out your account at the REAL bank website.

That's why you should never, EVER, enter your password into a website unless you see that the address of that website, up at the top of your browser window, begins with https... All websites start with http, but only SECURE websites have the "s" at the end: https, so be sure to look for it, EVERY TIME!!!

Whats phishing tom from myspace put something about that but what is it?

In computing, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from PayPal, eBay, Youtube or online banks are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging,[1] and it often directs users to enter details at a website. Phishing is an example of social engineering techniques used to fool users.[2] Attempts to deal with the growing number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, public awareness, and technical security measures.

A phishing technique was described in detail in 1987, and the first recorded use of the term "phishing" was made in 1996. The term is a variant of fishing,[3] probably influenced by phreaking,[4][5] and alludes to baits used to "catch" financial information and passwords.Whats phishing tom from myspace put something about that but what is it?
Phishing is when someone creates an official website, for example, MySpace, and codes it so that login form data is sent to a secret page, or email address.

The phisher then uses that information to login to your MySpace and do whatever he/she wants. If you use that password for more than one thing (called a master password), the phisher can also log into other accounts you have across the internet.Whats phishing tom from myspace put something about that but what is it?
LOL. You still believe in that imaginary dude, "TOM". Do you also still believe in Santa Claus?

Tom founded MySpace but he sold out to this old dude named Rupert Murdoch many years ago.

"Tom" is strictly an automated marketing "bot" now. He is not really your "friend". He cannot help you!Whats phishing tom from myspace put something about that but what is it?
Phising is an outsider program taking your pass word. You just need to reset the password. Also, check your security prefrences. Don't accept friend requests from ANYONE you don't know and be careful with the new Facebook rip off apps. Those are deadly.

What does Reporting a Phishing Sceme on hotmail do?

I've reported one emailer 14 times now (same address everytime). And everyday I still get 2 or 3 emails from this person. They are trying to scam me into buying some crap. What does Reporting a Phishing Sceme on hotmail do?
I wonder is sometimes hotmail doesn't have something to do with some of the spam emails themselves. But just block the email address. That should take care of it.What does Reporting a Phishing Sceme on hotmail do?
If its advertising, its junk, not phishing.

Anyway, it goes into an electronic database where it records who reported it and information about the email. If enough people report it, someone/something will be notified and something will be done about it.

PurrWhat does Reporting a Phishing Sceme on hotmail do?
If they are just trying to sell you something then it is not phishing. It is just spam. Phishing is when they try to trick you into giving them you password and logon info. They do this by giving you some fake reason to log on to your acount with a link that appears to be from a site that you have an account with. When you follow the link the page it will look just like your the logon page that you normally go to but it is not. if you type in your password then you give it to them and they hijack your account,

Without taking any further chance of hijacking change all of your passwords and other pins you use in the Banking sites and this time be sure to do this on REAL WEBSITE containing HTTPS (a secure connection)

Also you can write a letter to the Branch Manager to either change your passwords/pins and request to get the new one.

Although the site www.indiastudychannel.com seems to be a correct site, you still take full precautions.

What is this? Is this a protection from Yahoo or a phishing? Does somebody else have this?

Protect users on this computer against password theft with a sign-in seal.

A sign-in seal is a secret message or photo that Yahoo! will display on this computer only. Look for it every time you sign in to make sure you're on a genuine Yahoo! site. If the message, photo, or colors are different, you may have landed on a phishing site.

    Customize your Sign-in Box

How would you like to customize your seal?

Create a text seal... Type a short, secret message for this computer

    21 characters max

Create a unique message that everyone using this computer will recognize鈥攆or example, your street address.

Don't include your ID or password!

Choose a photo that everyone using this computer will recognize.

It can be JPEG, JPG or GIF and should be under 2MB in size.

Phishing is emails or websites that try to fool you into giving them personal data like usernames, passwords accont numbers.... Often they will be setup to look like official banking or ebay sites. Read http://www.mike-carson.co.uk/Security.ht鈥?/a> and in particular take a look at the fake HSBC page.

    What is phishing and hacking?

When do you know if you are getting hacked, and how to prevent it? ALSO, I have been receiving e-mails stating that I have won a cash grant/donation, they have gone even farther to say that I will receive it in my mail including the check, source of money, etc etc. It seemed very credible and believable bc I go to many scholarship websites and this was a "scholarship grant". The only thing they needed was my name, address, and telephone to send it. My friend suggested that they could be "phishing" to steal my identity.. is this possible? Where can I find out if this is a credited site and people???What is phishing and hacking?
Phishing is just a fake website pages.. which is just similiar to the orignal online vendors but they dont have the security certificates.. and they are fake... and whenever u put any of the information in then .. an email abt that information is sent to that phissing website hoster... which shouldn't eb happened..

while hacking is may be concerned in many fields hardwares.. websites or computers... well it basically mean to just have a loot at the encypted or confidential matters or someone by breaking into his/her system...

if u find this helpfull then just rate it the best one..What is phishing and hacking?

Word of advice, never answer any of those emails, no matter how lucrative they sound. If you must answer one, call them to verify. By answering an email back, clicking a link or especially opening an attachment you leave yourself open for your IP address to get accessed which can lead to viruses, hacking, malware programs, etc. Make sure you have a firewall activated on your computer to prevent hackers.

PayPal - E-mail today was phishing and clicked on the link?

Hello, I'd like to know what is going to happen and what I can do. I received an email today that stated that I have to pay a bill of $60 via my paypal account and clicked on the link, before realizing that it was actually a phishing email.

What can happen now? What should I do?

How does it work, will they have any of my info?

Any helpful answer is appreciated and thanked for.PayPal - E-mail today was phishing and clicked on the link?
Since you didn't give the phishers your personal information, you're in no danger at all. Just spam that message into the garbage and avoid making this mistake again. Remember PayPal will never send you an email like the one you go. Any information you want to change should be done at their secure website.

Now if you get any more messages like that, send it off to spoof@paypal.com The people will let you know shortly if the message came from them. If the message came from the phishers, do as I told you earlier.

I hope this should ease your concerns a little bit.PayPal - E-mail today was phishing and clicked on the link?
Well, use your brain here. Did you just click on a link, or did you give them some personal information? If you did, you need to take immediate steps to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft. If you didn't give them your name, address, bank account, credit cards, etc., etc., then forward the email to spoof@paypal.com, or use this link.

    https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cm鈥?/a>

PayPal investigates every spoofing and phishing attempt they are told about.PayPal - E-mail today was phishing and clicked on the link?
As long as you didn't enter "ANY" of your personal information in that website your ok. But what you want to do is forward that phishing email to spoof@paypal.com, clean your computer update your spy-ware and anti-virus software do a complete scan on your computer, then change your ebay and PayPal passwords. Never enter a link from ebay or paypal sent to you via email, paypal emails usually never send links in their emails and they never ask for personal information via email. Always make sure you are always in a legitimate ebay or paypal site by checking if your browser has identified the website first by looking at the websites certificates. Also the ebay toolbar is very helpful cause it automatically identifies ebay and Pay Pal websites when you enter those sites but thats up to you if you want to get that. Good Luck

    What is Facebook Phishing?

Ok I heard about this on the news one night but I don't really understand it. So what exactly is Facebook Phishing? What is Facebook Phishing?
    It's simply like this..

phishing site is a exactly same page of the normal facebook login page. But when you enter your email and the password on login field, phishing sites save those login details. then the owner of the phishing site can login to your facebook account with your details later!

only way to recognize a phishing site is reading the address bar of the browser. it should be the normal facebook login URL. if you see something like "www.newfacebook.com/login.php" or "www.facebookbeta.com/login.php" DONT try to login with your real details!

    XDWhat is Facebook Phishing?
There is an email scam going round at the moment telling you that your Facebook password has been changed and asking you to log on to find your new password. Don't, it just let's some phoney into your private details and goodness knows how they'll use them once they have them.

I keep hearing about phishing on the Internet. What is it?

When criminals fish for your bank account information by claiming to be a bank or some other financial institution and requesting your account number and other personal information. Usually the e-mail or website will have a legitimate look to it, making the victim believe that it is real and they are safe to give out their information.I keep hearing about phishing on the Internet. What is it?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhishingI keep hearing about phishing on the Internet. What is it?
Its like Fishing, as in casting a wide net and hoping you catch something but not knowing what you'll catch. It refers to sending out junk fake emails asking for information like account numbers and passwords to see if someone is gullible enough to fall for it.I keep hearing about phishing on the Internet. phishing is a website that makes you think it is another site. Such as Ebay or bankning sites. It is set up illegaly to fool you into giving it account information.

I don't think it's happening to my profile but I keep trying to post bulletins but they are not showing up. Is that happening to anybody else? What's this phishing thing that's going on with myspace now?
Phishing definition - the act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private personal identity data and financial account information that will later be used for identity theft.

The phishing e-mail has a link that directs the user to visit a Web site where the user is asked to update personal information, such as passwords and credit card, social security, and bank account numbers, that the legitimate enterprise already has. What's this phishing thing that's going on with myspace now?
yeah, it was just a bug and myspace is fixing it. even tom posted up a bullentin about it. just give it some time.

    proof from tom's bullentin:

if you got locked for being phished in the last hour, it's a bug! we're working on fixing it right now. sorry about that! the mechanism to detect if your account has been phished has been very powerful for stopping phishing, but it went a little haywire just now. things should be back to normal soon! if you're wondering what phishing is, read my blog :)What's this phishing thing that's going on with myspace now?

Please, be very careful with Paypal, they hijack customer's money for 180 days

so they can day-trade it and put the profit in their own pockets.

So they usually use "Money on hold" or "suspicious activities" as an excuse to use their customer's money.

I think that you should use AVG 8.5 Free Edition. It removes everything that you listed up there. Also it is free and very easy to use.
    CCleaner

    Avast! Home Edition

And Mcafee SiteadvisorWhat is the best free antivirus/spyware/phishing/hac鈥?firewall scan/remover program(s)?

aviras my favourite real time protection, i also have malwarebytes, superantispyware for viruses each find diiferent things scan different areas so gd to have both, for history cleaner i use ccleaner formerly known as crap cleaner, removes temp files history and faulty reg keys. :O)
Use what you want. But don't let anyone talk you into downloading AVG free. It's about as sorry a AV there ever was. No root kit protection and Trojan Mal ware walks right by it. Why do you think all these people who download AVG and other free AV's have to download half a dozen other programs to supplement AVG, Avast, Trend Micro etc' etc? Because they lack protection in places that count the most. Like drive by downloads, Trojan Mal ware' Spy ware' Ad ware and on and on.

You can download half a dozen space hogging programs or you can download one. People on here will tell you that you have to have layered protection. Not so. What you have to have is the right program to start with.

The right one right now is Kaspersky all in one. It works and it works well. All the programs you need all in one. AV' AS Anti phishing filter' Malware protection Fire wall all in one. It uses less memory. Takes up less room on your hard drive. Doesn't slow your computer down. You do need at least one gig of memory to run Kaspersky.

Then after that all you need is Ccleaner to keep old cookies and temp files cleaned out..

Try it. You will like it. There is a learning curve with Kaspersky. It's not a kiddie AV like AVG. But once you learn it you will laugh at those free AV's. You will never go back to free.
I have used Zone Alarm Firewall, I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just changed to Avast antivirus and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
I had a horrible experience with McAfee..dumped it. Here is what I have been using with great success:

    Avast 4.home edition..free

    Zone alarm firewall...free

Windows 3 Advanced System Care...free..for maintaining and clean up.

Not one problem in over a year with the above FREE programs. If you wnat to upgrade the Windows 3 System, you can.
