It's pretty simple and effective. Imagine getting spam that states "We need you to enter re-enter your password because our banks records are going under change and we need you to verify it".
So examplebank that you go to, it says examplebank so you think it's real. But when you click on the "Click here to verify" it sends to examplebanks.com %26lt;---bankS or something clever.
So when you enter it, the page is stolen from the real bank. So you don't know, enter your password, and all your money is stolen =)
There are many other ways to do it but that is the main one.
In computing, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites (Youtube, Facebook, My Space), auction sites (eBay), online banks (PayPal), or IT Administrators (Yahoo, ISPs, corporate) are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging,[1] and it often directs users to enter details at a fake website whose URL and look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one. Phishing is an example of social engineering techniques used to fool users.[2] Attempts to deal with the growing number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, public awareness, and technical security measures.
A phishing technique was described in detail in 1987, and the first recorded use of the term "phishing" was made in 1996. The term is a variant of fishing,[3] probably influenced by phreaking,[4][5] and alludes to baits used to "catch" financial information and password
ITS NEVER STUPID TO WANT TO LEARN ... PEACE!I know this might be a stupid question, but what is phishing?
To put it simply it will warn against spam and scams that are common on internet these days. The phishing filter turned on will warn you of sites and e-mails that are scamming for your personal information and using it for identity theft and other criminal intentions. Keep the filter on and get a firewall if you do not have one. Good luck.

=]I know this might be a stupid question, but what is phishing?
you create a copy cat like web site called the bait. they copy cat web site tricks you into entering personal info and you are caught. Just like in regular fishing. you sling out a bait covering a hook and you catch suckers. lol
